If you’ve not heard about it yet, Ning lets you create your own social networks for free without you having to worry about the design,installation and hosting the site. Its as simple as signing up for an online account. Just create a free Ning account- (if you’ve ever created a blogger or wordpress hosted blog, it might feel familiar to you.) and then enter information about the network you want to create like the name, then choose a url for your network. After the initial setup you’d be asked to customize the feature set and look of your network. You can add or remove features like video, forum etc. Then choose a template for your network and customize the themes settings (logo,headers etc.) and you’re ready to go.
Ning is a good option to create a social community if your network is going to be relatively small, and also if you don’t want the hassle of hosting your own site. By default, a Ning social network comes with a quota of 10GB of storage and 100GB of bandwidth, which should be enough for any small to moderate social networks.
Now if you are thinking how Ning manages to give so much for free, well they run their own ads on your social network and earn from it. But for a fee of 19.95 per month, you can remove Ning ads and run your own ads and earn money. You can also use your own domain names instead of Ning sub domain and in case your site is doing well enough to surpass the default bandwidth limits, you can also purchase additional storage and bandwidth.
