Google Chrome - 5 Top Tips

Google have only just introduced its third update to their Chrome browser yesterday. (If you’re currently using Google Chrome it would have automatically updated by now). Before Chrome was released to the general public there was much hype surrounding its content but since it was released there have been some minor bugs and security flaws in Chromes programming (hence the third update just recently). Google says that it will introduce many extensions for its browser and will hopefully release a mobile version in the not to distant future. If you are running chrome here’s five great tips for the average Google Chrome user wanting to get the most out of it: (thanks to ostatic)

1. Run Chrome on Mac OS X and Linux

CrossOver Chromium from CodeWeavers can be used to run Chrome on Mac OS X and Linux. You’ll find downloads specific to most popular Linux distros. Even CodeWeavers describes this as early “proof-of-concept” more than anything else, but you may want to give it a try.

2. Surf Anonymously in Chrome. The Chromium open source core of the Chrome browser has been tweaked to produce a version of Chrome that can allow for anonymous browsing. People in parts of the world where Internet use can lead quickly to jail time may be interested in this, or hot spot users who want an added layer of anonymity may be interested.

3. Create and Save Profiles. Google Chrome Backup is a freely downloadable tool that lets you backup and restore profiles you’ve created in Chrome. It’s wizard-driven, to keep the process easy.

4. Use the About: Pages. Like Firefox, Google Chrome can pull up a ton of useful diagnostic and other types of information if you type about: commands in Chrome’s address bar. For example, type about:plugins to get the list of plugins available for Chrome.

5. Get a Portable Version of Chrome for Your USB Drive. You can get a lightweight tweak of Chrome based on the Chromium code here. Hat tip to Lifehacker for this.

Speed up Website Load Time - Javascript, CSS Compressor

The beauty of web designing comes with a bit of javascript and mainly css. I mean for me personally, I can’t think of a way to build a website without css. So how can you speed up the load time of your website but still use javascript libraries and css? The answer is quite simple. I found a script from Aciddrop, it can give you great results. All you do is add three lines of code and there you have it! A faster loading webpage.

So how does it do that? Well, say for example, if you have 6 javascript files it would be much quicker for you to join all the JavaScript together into one file and serve that instead. You can decrease the loading time further by minify your JavaScript, CSS and HTML. And also, by gzipping your page’s components and adding a far-future expires header can make your pages load faster as well.

Doing all these adjustments manually would take some time so using the script by AcidDrop might speed up things. On the test page the load time with the compressor turned on was generally below a second, and without the compressor between 3-5 seconds. The Yahoo Yslow rating went from F(45) to A(97) as well.

I found out a way that you can find the font type by using this tool online caleld Whatthefont.

Ever wanted to find a font just like the one used by certain publications, corporations, or ad campaigns? Well now you can, using our WhatTheFont font recognition system. Upload a scanned image of the font and instantly find the closest matches in our database.

Alternatively, you can try Identifont which is the largest independent directory of typefaces on the Internet, with information about fonts from 534 publishers and 143 vendors.

How to Turn off or Disable Snap Shots on some Links?

After gaining good page rank on one of my post on “How to disable snapshots on all site?” i thought of writing a short post on how to turn off snapshot on some links only. I started using snapshot due to recommendation from our readers. I find it very irritating when it pops up as you hover over a URL.

I don’t particularly find it irritating when we hover over the bubble as we are wanting to look at the snapshot or requesting an action. Anyway, to turn off the snapshot over some particular links on your website, you need to add the “snap_noshots” class to that URL. If you look at Teckiech sidebar ads (look at source code if you wish), you will notice that the snapshot is turned off and even at the technorati favorite button and the digg logo on the other sidebar.
