Mailplane is an application that combines Gmail and your Mac together. It is essentially Mail.app for your Gmail account. It allows all of the functionality of regular Gmail, but adds a lot more to make our life’s much easier.
You can compose, save and send email like you do in a regular browser, but the buttons on the application allow you to compose, send, browse, reply, forward, and Mailplane even includes all of Gmail’s shortcuts that are available. Sending pictures is much faster with drag-and-drop functionality (so you drag the picture on to the screen) and a media browser (which basically contains all the media such as videos, pictures and so on). Mailplane also combines into your contacts from Address Book. The difference between Mailplane and a regular desktop mail client is that Mailplane doesn’t download all your emails, it leaves them on Gmail’s servers.
Not to mention Google Mail’s superb SPAM protection, endless storage and global access - and the friendliness of your Mac.
Features
More and more useful applications are web applications. With some good reasons:
- They can be accessed from everywhere. More and more people use several computers at once, e.g. work, home, internet cafe, etc.
- Collaboration is built in.
- Updates are performed centrally, no need to install new desktop releases.
- Data is stored on the server, which is often much more secure than doing it locally.
- Mac users can use webapps, too! In the old days most applications were for “Windows” only.
