This is huge loss for people who give out their personal information to phishers. These phishers do have past experience and they have their own tricks of retrieving the data from you. It could start from doing a fake phone survey or more complicated by buying a close domain to the service providers and giving you a URL to click and change password. These people make up a really good story such as “our site has been hacked and we want you to change your password to protect yourself”.
So, how can you tell the difference. Well, here are some tips that might help you from getting into these scams.
1. If there is an email asking you for your personal information, please confirm with the official website that you signed up for.
2. Some serious phishers are also hackers, they hack into the email service provider and make it look like it is from the domain you signed up for (somewebsite.com)
3. If the company is not too popular, it is most likely that they could be hacked or are involved in a scam. So never give out your credit card details
4. It is better to give your credit card details to Paypal than the official website but is NOT RECOMMENDED by me.
